VISTAGY Viewpoint Newsletter
A Quarterly Newsletter from VISTAGY, Inc.

December 2008

In this issue of VISTAGY Viewpoint we’re taking a close look at how to get the most out of your software for developing composite aircraft.

In Ask the Expert, Julio Carrera, VISTAGY's FiberSIM Product Development Manager, discusses enhancements to the Automated Deposition Design optional module in the next release of FiberSIM®. It will be possible to identify and, in many cases, solve manufacturing issues for automated deposition in the design phase.

In Trends in Engineering, the importance of using the appropriate tools to fully leverage composites is discussed in an article that recently appeared in Aerospace Manufacturing and Design.

In our Featured Customer section, we have a story from Aviation Maintenance that highlights Delta TechOps’ use of FiberSIM to repair and maintain composite aircraft components.

Finally, if you are involved in airframe assembly, our Tech Tip is a must-read. You’ll never look at joints and fasteners the same way again.

We hope that this issue will provoke thoughts about how you can enhance your composite engineering and airframe development processes, and we encourage you to contact us with questions, story topics and suggestions. Thank you for your continued support.

Best regards,

ASK THE EXPERT: Improving Manufacturability with New Automated Deposition Design Techniques

Digital EngineeringCustomers have reported significant gains in efficiency using the current version of FiberSIM for designing parts manufactured by automated deposition machines, but there are two limitations that are going to be addressed in the next release to make it even more powerful. Right now, an engineer has to manually determine where to create and place the bird beaks, bat ears and chamfers to alleviate issues that result from minimum course length limitations. In addition, there is currently no way to identify manufacturing problems in the design phase that result from the inability of the machine to lay down the tape at the proper angle to match the ply boundary definition. But both those things are about to change. Learn how it will become much easier to identify and, in many cases, solve automated deposition manufacturing issues in the design phase.       Read more >>

TRENDS IN ENGINEERING: Getting the Most Bang for your Advanced Composite Buck

Aerospace companies have increasingly taken advantage of the benefits offered by advanced composites. However, to gain the maximum value from these materials, aircraft manufacturers and their suppliers must employ tools that enable them to work quickly, efficiently and cost effectively. Read more about how FiberSIM enables aircraft firms to do just that in an article that recently appeared in Aerospace Manufacturing and Design entitled, “Advanced Composites: The Right Stuff if you have the Right Tools.”       Read more >>

FEATURED CUSTOMER: Delta TechOps Realizes More than 10X ROI on Composite Repair

As companies continue to increase the amount of advanced composites used in new aircraft, it only makes sense that composite repair would become a hot topic of conversation. Delta TechOps is one company that people are talking about. They’ve used FiberSIM to achieve greater than 10X ROI on composite repairs for the 452 airliners in the Delta main line fleet. Learn more about the nascent aerospace composite repair market and VISTAGY’s role in it by reading an article in Aviation Maintenance by Vicki McConnell entitled, “Tech Toolbox Keeps Pace in Composite Repair.”       Read more >>
